I couldn’t be more excited about featuring at the newest (and my new favorite) poetry event in Chicago, Surviving the Mic. Founded by Nikki Patin, Surviving the Mic is a safe space, inclusive & intersectional open mic for survivors of trauma (with priority given to survivors of sexual assault and domestic abuse).
“We want this to be a space where people can be vulnerable but we also want to care for and respect that vulnerability. The intention is to give space to people speaking poetry to power, telling the truths they need to tell.”
Sidenote: Surviving the Mic has other initiatives as well, including a ten week workshop for survivors of sexual assault who identity as of African Descent, among others. This show is extremely important, necessary, radical work and I’m so humbled to take the stage tomorrow.
The show takes place every 3rd Thursday, so feel free to come by next month as well!
